Fix: High CPU Usage Due To Chromium Host Executable

Has your PC been running extremely slow lately? Have you also just recently installed Autodesk Desktop App? Then you’re most likely the victim of Chromium Host Executable. Autodesk is a truly innovative company that delivers a variety of software to students, professional designers, and engineers all over the world. Despite this, many Autodesk users reported a maxed-out CPU when they opened their task manager. The culprit? Chromium Host Executable or AcWebBrowser.exe.

What Is Chromium Host Executable?

This executable file usually occurs when the Autodesk Desktop App has trouble running and is being blocked from accessing the internet. If you’re on an older system that uses an integrated graphics card driver, you may also experience slow performance. The Chromium Host Executable is an embedded Chrome frame that is used to allow Autodesk features to access the internet for online help. For example, the welcome screen, licensing modules, and tutorials all use this feature. Moreover, you may notice multiple instances of AcWebBrowser.exe running. This is because Autodesk uses a multiprocessing feature to improve performance. In this article, we’ll show you how to fix the high CPU usage caused by Chromium Host Executable and bring your PC back up to its optimal performance.

How To Fix Chromium Host Executable – Simple Working Methods

In this section, we’ll discuss several ways you can get rid of Chromium Host Executable or AcWebBrowser.exe. The main reason as to why this occurs is because Autodesk is constantly trying to access the internet for online help. Hence, most of our solutions will be based on fixing this problem.

Method #1: Enable Offline Help For Autodesk Apps

If you’re on an older version of AutoDesk apps such as AutoCAD 2011 or 2012, you’ll already have offline help files installed by default. However, if you’re on any version later than 2013, offline help is not included and will have to be downloaded manually. Hence, if you’re on version 2012 and older, skip step 1.

  1. Download the offline help files by selecting the Help drop-down menu. Click “Download Offline Help”. You will be taken to a web-page where you can follow the instructions to download the offline help files for your Autodesk product.
  2. In AutoCAD command line type OPTIONS or SETTINGS and hit Enter.
  3. In the Options window, select the System tab.
  4. Disable the checkbox “Access online content when available”.
  5. After clicking OK, Autodesk will no longer access the internet for online help, meaning Chromium Host Executable will not run.

Please note, you’ll have to do this for each Autodesk app separately if you have more than one. We used AutoCAD as an example because its the most common software available by Autodesk.

Method #2: Disable Autodesk Automatic Updates

By default, Autodesk will have automatic updates turned on. You can disable this in the Windows Services Manager. Just follow the simple instructions below.

  1. Hold Windows Key + R to open the run dialog box. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Right-click on “Autodesk Desktop Desktop App Service” and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled and press OK.

Now, Autodesk Desktop App should no longer run Chromium Host Executable in order to retrieve updated files.

Method #3: Disable Autodesk Welcome Screen

In some cases, disabling the Welcome Screen for Autodesk products can solve the Chromium Host Executable disk usage issue. You will need to access the Registry Editor to do this properly. The Windows Registry contains crucial files that if misplaced or deleted could potentially crash your entire system. Hence, be careful when navigating through the Registry keys and only access the files we’ve mentioned in the instructions below.

  1. Hold Windows Key + R to open the run dialog box. Type “Regedit” and press Enter.
  2. Navigate through the folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.0\ACAD-8001:409
  3. Now on the right-hand column, double-click on LaunchNFW and change its value to 3.
  4. Press OK. The value in brackets under data should now be (3).

Method #4: Log Out Of A360 Cloud Service

A360 is Autodesk’s personal cloud service. This is an excellent feature that allows users to share their designs, models, and detailed visualizations online with others. It’s an Autodesk viewing software that allows you to access models right from your browser. However, sometimes using A360 can cause the Chromium Host Executable file to eat up your CPU usage. Hence, it’s recommended that you log out of A360 when not in use. You can do this by clicking on your avatar at the top-right corner and selecting the “Sign Out” option.

Method #5: Uninstall And Reinstall Autodesk Desktop App

Now if all the methods listed above have failed then the only option you have left is to uninstall and reinstall your Autodesk app. In order to properly uninstall Autodesk, you’ll need to use a proper uninstalling tool. A normal uninstall will leave folders and registry keys unattended, hence we recommend you use the Revo Uninstaller.

  1. Open Revo Uninstaller and search for Autodesk Desktop App.
  2. Select Uninstall and Revo will begin the process. Click next when completed.
  3. Now Revo will display all leftover Registry items. Click Select All and click on Delete.
  4. Next, Revo will display all the files and folders that were left behind, click Select All then press Delete.
  5. After Autodesk has been removed, download the installer from the official Autodesk website. Follow the on-screen instructions to re-install Autodesk.
