Japanese manufacturers to jointly develop technologies to take on Intel and Samsung

Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC have agreed to jointly develop advanced chip technologies based around the upcoming 32-nanometre standard in a move designed to help the three companies keep up with rivals Intel and Samsung.

According to a report in the Nikkei business daily yesterday, the three companies had been in talks about sharing the estimated ¥100-200 billion (£405-£810 million) development costs.

The development program will range from chips for use in flat screen TVs through to other high power home electronics. Toshiba is largely expected by industry professionals to hold a non-majority lead in the group of three.
