Gates: Tech to lead growth

Warns that the current downturn could last four years, but that innovation will drive upswing

Bill Gates has predicted that it could take as many as four years for the economy to recover, but said that technology and science would play a key part in it.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Gates said that while the global economic system has taken a battering, once it had recovered it would lead to substantial advances in software, as well as medicine and genetics.

These developments would in turn lead to new growth, insisted Gates.
