Germany: Report shows LCD TVs lead the way

German sales of consumer electronics have continued to grow at a strong pace, boosted in part by its participation in Euro 2008, according to GfK's TEMAX report.

The German market saw growth of 5.2 per cent overall in the second quarter of 2008 to €9.5 billion (£7.5 billion), driven largely by LCD TVs – sales of which accounted for around 50 per cent of all consumer electronics purchases and were up by 19.2 per cent on the same period in 2007.

Office equipment and consumables, such as printer ink, grew by 3.3 per cent, while sales of IT grew by just 2.5 per cent.

The small and large home appliances also remained strong, with sales increasing by 5.3 per cent and 5.2 per cent, in stark contrast to the UK market where sales have been in freefall for some time now.
