OS sees proliferation of pre-installs on PCs

Recent months have seen a boost in the number of PCs that come with a Linux operating system pre-installed, says market researcher Context.

In January 2007, Linux based PCs accounted for 0.1 per cent of total PC shipments within the UK, however, that figure had grown to 2.8 per cent last month.

Although this remains a small percentage, especially when compared to Microsoft’s 93 per cent market share, the figure represents a growth factor of almost thirty times.

Additionally, Dell recently became the first major PC vendor to offer Linux-based Ubuntu as a pre-installed OS on its products.

Context highlighted the correlation of the growth of Linux with the release of everyone’s favourite punch-bag, Windows Vista and a market share boost of 1.3 per cent that coincided with the release of Ubuntu 7.1.
