Retailer celebrates landmark achievement over weekend

The UK's third largest consumer electronics chain celebrated its 75th anniversary yesterday, commemorating the day the man behind the company George Hollingbery first hung the Comet sign above his shop in Hull.

The firm, which started selling batteries in 1933, long remained one the UK's leading consumer electronics retailers. It was also the first company to launch a warehouse style store for selling electricals such as televisions and radios.

It was only displaced as the UK's second largest CE retailer earlier this month by Argos.

The firm is currently undergoing a massive refitting of many of its stores, adding mezzanine levels to many and expanding the range of products it carries.
