Ofcom says competitive marketplace could reduce the need for harsh sector regulation
The European Commission has given the green light for the current regulations imposed on broadband wholesalers in the UK to be relaxed, the BBC reports.
A recent review has claimed that around 64 per cent of the UK broadband marketplace enjoys enough competition in the sector to prevent any one wholesaler winning a dominant position.
The news has lead Ofcom to suggest that it might now relax the regulations that were first brought in to prevent former monopoly holder BT gaining a stranglehold on the market.

The problem I see about preventing monopolies is BT who we have all grown up with and most of us love cant even compete in there own market as they have been strangled to death by ofcom, its BT who ultimately provide broadband to the other providers and this in my view is preventing BT from installing broadband in little villages and rural areas (like where I live) because why should BT spend millions of pounds and time and effort to lay new lines down at there expense so all the other companies can sell broadband to us to us cheaper then they can, BT are more expensive to have broadband and telephone with because there hands are tied so why cant BT price match and at least they can give us the service we all want fairly. GIVE BT A CHANCE PLEASE!!!

What ofcom ought to regulate is the 0870 numbers customers have to phone in order to report a faulty service.
I spent 48 minutes on 0870 numbers for what is obviously an ISP provider fault. I have spoken on these high cost numbers for hours often to people who do not understand either English or my accent - I suspect its a lack of understanding of English as I am not the only one to complain about this problem. In my experience Orange (for me) have been the worst offenders they were so bad I terminated my account. But I have had similar experiences with AOL Tiscali and BT (admittedly not quite as bad as Orange) but none less bad. Perhaps Ofcon know about these problems but are happy that these companies 'rake it in' at our expence'. I cant see any other explaination for it - I cant see any other country putting up with contacting firms at premium rate to report their inadaquacies of service Ofcom? What Com or even Con!!!
