Dell sees slow market share growth despite major retail strategy

HP extended its lead in global PC shipments in the fourth quarter, despite moves by Dell to increase its retail presence during the period.

Both IDC and Gartner have released reports on the state of global PC shipments, with both results generally echoing each other.

HP shipped 49.4 million PCs in 2007 according to Gartner, an increase of 30 per cent over 2006's shipment figures, giving the company 18.2 per cent of the market. IDC also put HP's share of the market at 19 per cent.

Dell, however, struggled to secure its position as the world's second largest vendor of PCs, despite moves into the retail channel.

It saw shipments of 38.7 per cent, a rise of just 1.7 per cent over its 2006 figures.

In contrast, Acer, which dethroned last year's third place vendor, Lenovo, saw growth of 9.6 per cent, according to IDC, thanks in part to its acquisition of Gateway and Packard Bell. Gartner estimated Acer's market share at 9.5 per cent.

Lenovo had 7.5 per cent of the market, according to IDC's report, and 7.7 according to Gartner.
