Component shortages could hit laptop availability in Q3 2008

Upstream manufacturers warned to learn lessons from problems earlier this year
There could be a shortage of laptops in the third quarter of 2008 due to component supply problems in the second quarter.
According to sources who spoke to Taiwanese channel site Digitimes, the notebook industry is facing the risk of component shortages if upstream suppliers fail to accelerate their production.
ODMs had blamed similar problems this year on the failure of upstream manufacturers to sufficiently accelerate their production of key components and have warned that similar failure to act could damage their reputations.
Some ODMs have missed volume targets by as much as ten percent. Many of the components that there were shortages of this year, such as power supply units, graphic cards, high-capacity hard disk drives, panels, batteries and mechanical parts are at significant risk of suffering supply problems again next year.
