Chief executive of US retail giant says acquisitions ‘not off the table’

Following its mammoth £1.1 billion purchase of half of Carphone Warehouse’s retail operation last week, US retailer Best Buy has signalled its intentions to continue its European push, hinting at further wide-scale retail chain purchases.

Chief executive Brad Anderson said the firm may opt to buy up smaller competitors, and highlighted an interest in DSGi and Kesa – which owns Comet – by saying: “It’s one of those things we have considered for years – and it’s not off the table either.”

Following the Carphone Warehouse deal, shares in DSGi jumped 6.8 per cent and Kesa’s 1.9 per cent, as speculation towards Best Buy’s interest in the firms rose.

Commentators have also flagged up German retail chain Media Markt – Europe’s largest electricals retailer – as a possible purchase option for Best Buy.
